Denshinkan began in 1997. At that time, it was known as the Shotokan Karate-Do Association. The school was founded by Sensei Brian Donaldson and concentrated on the teachings of Traditional Shotokan Karate-Do.

While the main focus of the school remained on Shotokan Karate-Do, it was believed that the students could benefit from other aspects of Martial Arts.

In 2001, the name Adelaide Academy of Combat and Defence was given to the club. Zanshin Kobudo was included in the available list of classes for students and occasional self-defence seminars began to be offered to the public. In January 2004, Combat Hapkido was also added to the list of available classes.

In an effort to link the Japanese background of our previous karate, the raw effectiveness of grappling and balance displacement systems and improve the in-depth knowledge of combat, body function and history of the arts, the search continued. In 2010, the results of those searches were delivered as Shotokan Karate-Do, Combat Hapkido and Zanshin Kobudo were removed from the curriculum in favour of a far more comprehensive system that included the majority of those systems combined, Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu.

In 2011, the name of the club changed to Denshinkan in an effort to harness its classical but ever evolving nature.

The name DENSHINKAN means a school that evolves from tradition.

DESHINKAN; (伝進館)
